![]() These results can be linked to the concept of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a syndrome that often precedes dementia. Furthermore, these brain lesions were associated with reduced cognitive performance, even for AF patients with clinically silent infarcts. It has recently been reported that patients with AF aged 65 years or older have a relatively high burden of brain lesions, including overt and clinically unrecognized vascular brain lesions, micro-bleeds, and other structural brain lesions. Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, is considered a key risk condition for the development of dementia, alongside age and other risk factors. The global number of people living with dementia is growing rapidly, constituting a major challenge to health-care systems, working societies, and families worldwide.
